At a recent Board meeting, the Hunterdon County Commissioners presented a proclamation to artist Joseph Garcia, in recognition of his generous donation of a painting depicting the historic Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge. This historic bridge, dating back to 1872, is located in Delaware Township and is the last remaining covered bridge in New Jersey.
Commissioner Director Jeff Kuhl shared, “On behalf of the Board I want to thank Mr. Garcia, for his beautiful painting of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge. This artwork wonderfully depicts one of Hunterdon County’s most beloved and historical landmarks. We appreciate Mr. Garcia’s generosity and recognize his amazing artistic talent.”
In March of 2024, the County Commissioner Board along with Constitutional Officers and members of the Department of Public Works and Engineering celebrated the official reopening of the renovated covered bridge. Preservation of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge has been a priority for the county, with necessary repairs being made throughout the years due to its historic significance.
The most recent repair work on the bridge was completed by Hahr Construction and included removing and replacing the timber stringers and the bridge deck; replacing the existing timber curbs and railings; and painting the bridge.
In 1974, the covered bridge was placed on the National Register of Historic Places and in 1998, the Covered Bridge Historic District was created and listed on the National Register.
Mr. Garcia’s watercolor painting of the Green Sergeant’s Covered Bridge will be displayed prominently within the county to be enjoyed by future generations.
